Projects
Structural repairs, including replacement of bearing bolts and repainting of the columns and suppoting structural steel. Precon Marine, Inc. will also be placing handrail enclosures, to make the bridge a safer link to downtown Norfolk. New electrical conduit, means that uninterupted electrical service to the lighting of the bridge will remain in place, and provide years of continued service.
Precon Marine will also enclose the existing support columns in high strength concrete, by fabricating forms, and fill these forms with high strength materials, which will ensure that the structural integrity will remain in tact for years to come. The City of Norfolk, has entrusted Precon Marine to provide this upgrade, and we see our role as guardian of public safety for this historic and useful link to the greater downtown area.

The original plan was to renivate the existing column supports, via spall and crack repairs, along with replacement of column anchorages. "We saw a problem with the existing plan, and worked closely with city personnel to provide a better, and more cost effective soution over the long run". The decision to improve upon the scheduled paint system, and the encasement of the supporting columns, will insure that this type of repair will not be needed, for quite some time. "We could have done exactly what was spelled out in the plans, and then we or another contractor would have been back in the near future to do these repairs again. Instead we worked with the city to provide engineering so that repairs would be more logical, and longstanding."
We hope to complete these repairs with minimal interruption of services, but will take into account public safety, and inconvenience in our decisions to minimize foot trafic on the bridge. If we feel colure is neccessay please realize that it is your safety that we are trying to protect.
As of December 1, 2008, this project was completed. The improved Pile Ecasement design, and upgrades to the expansion of the bridge should keep the bridge in servicable condition for years to come. We were able to make all repairs and upgrades with no interuption in service.
