Underwater Debris Removal from Piers V1 IL & M1 IL
Woodrow Wilson Bridge

During the process of constructing the new Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge connecting Virginia and Maryland over the Potomac River, the joint venture of Tidewater Skanska, Inc., Kiewit Construction Company and The Clark Construction Group, Inc., (TKC), awarded Precon Marine, Inc. a subcontract for the removal of underwater debris from underside of the bridge pier caps.

Supported by a 120’ x 34’ crane barge equipped with a barge mounted 30-Ton Link-Belt RTC-8030 Crane and deck winches for operating the spuds, Precon Marine’s underwater dive team conducted the debris removal during nighttime hours so that it would not interfere with bridge construction. The “Kristina Marie", Precon’s 700 HP tug, was used to tow the crane barge back to shore daily to clear the waterway for bridge construction. Utilizing a surface supplied air diving system and underwater equipment such as underwater chain saws, burning gear, drills and jackhammers; Precon Marine divers successfully completed the project in September 2005.
