WEEKS MARINE, INC.
APM PORTSMOUTH MARINE TERMINALS

Sheet Pile Coating
Portsmouth, Virginia

As part of a $450 million project to build the country’s first major, privately developed container terminal on the Elizabeth River in the City of Portsmouth, Precon Marine, Inc. was contracted to blast and coat over 240,000 square feet of AZ and HZ piling. When complete, the APM Terminal facility will feature 4,000 feet of deepwater berth space, four times the current amount on a natural deepwater harbor of 50 feet and will be a catalyst for international business.

The steel sheet piles were blast cleaned utilizing a Pangborn Rotoblast Continuous Blast Cleaning System at the Precon Marine Chesapeake shop facility. Then an industrial coating was applied to the sheets in accordance with SSPC consensus standards. After the required drying time and inspection, the steel AZ & HZ pilings were loaded onto barges and transported to the marine terminal for installation.

The project was completed in September 2005.
