ARMADA/HOFFLER
CONSTRUCTION COMPANY The bulkhead repair project site was located at a marina for small watercraft along Jones Creek on the campus of Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia. A section of sheet pile wall approximately 100’ long on the north side of Jones Creek had failed. The concrete cap had moved laterally toward the waterside of the bulkhead an apparent maximum displacement of approximately two to three feet. Significant subsidence of retained material on the landside of the bulkhead had occurred. Precon Marine, Inc. was contracted by Armada/Hoffler Construction Company to install 633 linear feet of new sheet pile bulkhead with a concrete cap and 20’ return walls on each end. ASTM A572 Grade 50 New Domestic PZ22 steel sheet piling in 35-foot paired lengths was utilized with the tie-back Manta Ray Earth Anchoring System. Z sections are considered one of the most efficient piles available today. Having the interlocks located at the outer fibers of the wall, assures the designer of their published section modulus. After temporary steel sheets were installed to provide access and safety for construction, the new bulkhead was installed 2-feet channelward of the existing deteriorated bulkhead. Existing piers remained in place and only timber piles that were in direct conflict with the new sheet pile retaining wall were removed. Clean sand backfill was used to fill the void between the two bulkheads. The project was completed
in October 2005.
