The Appomattox River Water Authority maintains Lake Chesdin, a 17-mile long impoundment on the Appomattox River, from which a supply of 77 million gallons per day is available. The water plant currently has a rated capacity of about 46 million gallons per day, which will be increased to 96 million gallons per day once the expansion is complete. The eastern and southern parts of Chesterfield, as well as the City of Colonial Heights, Petersburg, and Prince George County and Dinwiddie County are served by this reservoir.

Upon completion, the 72-inch diameter water transmission main will be connected to the discharge of two finished water pumping stations and traverse 2000 linear feet to the Chesterfield County Chesdin Road Pump Station. The 54-inch diameter raw water transmission main will traverse 3500 linear feet from the new raw water pump station to the water treatment plant rapid mixer.

The project was completed March 2004.
