NORTH CAROLINA STATE PORTS AUTHORITY
Repairs, Improvements and Upgrades To Berths 3 Through 8
Port of Wilmington, North Carolina

As operation Iraqi Freedom enters its second year, a massive operation has begun to bring troops back, and to send fresh replacements. A key part of that troop rotation is getting massive quantities of equipment and vehicles in place for them. The Port of Wilmington is one of 14 strategic commercial ports designated by the Department of Defense. Strategic ports must meet high standards of efficiency, flexibility, and security.

On January 14, 2004, Precon Marine, Inc. completed the $6.5 Million berth improvement project at the Port of Wilmington. The project was completed nearly 4 months ahead of schedule and just in time for the berthing of the Star Ikebana (pictured right).

The project consisted of:

  1. Spalled concrete repairs
  2. Installation of a new fender system at Berth 3 and part of Berth 4
  3. Installation of a new fender system on Berth 7
  4. Removal and reinstallation of existing fender panel systems at Berth 5 and Berth 6, and part of Berth 4
  5. Mooring hardware repairs on Berth 3 through 6
  6. Replacement of mooring bollards on Berths 7 & 8
  7. Installation of approximately 2120 lineal feet of Steel Sheet Pile Toe Wall underwater on Berths 5 Through 7
  8. Installation of approximately 3,597 lineal feet of new fiberglass reinforced composite plastic marine lumber curbing
  9. Concrete pile repairs including spall repairs, encasement of damaged piles, and replacement of selected portions of piles
